Samsung Galaxy S8 vs. HTC U Ultra – Which one is the best?

samsung galaxy s8 vs htc u ultra

Samsung announces the Galaxy S8 on March 29. This adds yet another flagship in the market, which is confusing for buyers as they do not know which phone to buy and why to buy it.

For instance, the HTC U Ultra is also new in the market and has some tongues wagging. It is a high quality phone, but so is the Galaxy S8. Are there, however, any differences or similarities between the two handsets that would cause the buyer to buy one over the other?

Design and display

When it comes to the design, the HTC is 5.7 inches with a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution and 513 ppi pixel density. This yields sharper images and viewing capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy S8 on the other hand, comes in at 5.8 inches, 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution and pixel density of 506 ppi.

On the sharpness of the display to the naked human eye, the HTC U Ultra has an upper hand although the S8 is the bigger phone. The S8 however, blows the HTC U Ultra out of the water with its super AMOLED display in comparison to the HTC’s S-LCD display

Software and hardware

While the U Ultra runs on Android 7.0 Operating System, the S8 runs on Android Nougat 7.1. While the HTC uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821, the S8 comes in with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 which is a step up. The former uses Quad core 2150 MHz, Kyro, 64 bit while the latter uses the Octa Core 2450 MHz, Kyro 280, 64 bit. It is these slight differences that make all the difference when customers are buying a new phone.

Both models show each other up when it comes to the hardware and software. While the HTC U Ultra has Optical image stabilization and a back illuminated sensor, the S8 has modes that allow the user to save images in RAW alongside the JPEG format, optical image stabilization and autofocus as well.

Storage, Camera and Battery

The HTC U Ultra is very similar to the Galaxy S8 when it comes to storage. Both have 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. They also have expandable external memory options for the users.

The cameras are also slightly similar in that they are both 12 MP, with both having Dual LED Flash. The aperture does differ with the HTC at f/1.8 and the S8 at f/1.7.

While the HTC has 3000mAh battery capacity, the S8 is pegged at either the same or 3250mAh which is still in the same neighborhood. The common factor is that they are both non-removable batteries.

These two phones have some subtle differences such as the fact that they are from different manufacturers. However, they are also extensively similar which allows the user to buy either one without necessarily missing out on a lot from the other model.

At the end of the day, brand loyalty and budget will be one of the main determinants in picking one phone between the HTC U Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy S8.
